ORGANIC HEIRLOOM TOMATOES
1. Amish Paste- (85 days) Ind. Ultimate sauce tomato with 8 oz., red, meaty, ox-heart shaped fruit with few seeds. Good balance of sweetness and acidity. Better than Roma.
2. Aunt Ruby’s German Green- (85 days) Ind. Beautiful, green, oblate, beefsteak with 12-16 oz fruits. When ripe these delicious wonders blush lightly yellow and develop an amber -pink tinge on the blossom end. Pick them before they get too soft. When cut open, the green flesh is marbled with pink. The flavor is comparable to Brandywine’s sweet, tart, rich and spicy all in one. From Ruby Arnold of TN, who got these from her grandfather from Germany.
3. Black Krim- (69 days)- Ind. Very unusual, Deep red fruits that are almost a shiny black with heavy green shoulders. Flesh is reddish –green. This one satisfies the craving for that real, old fashioned tomato flavor.
4. Brandy Wine (82 days) Ind. Often considered the best tasting tomato of all. Very large, often over 1 lb., the fruits have a deep pink skin and red flesh, and mature mid-season. Brandywine's luscious flavor is described full bodied with a hint of tartness. The medium-tall potato leaf plant is best staked or caged. Has soft skin that blemishes easily and is prone to cracking. Famous Quisenberry strain of Amish origin
5. Cherokee Purple- (77 days) Ind.-yet relatively short vines. Globes are10-13 oz. with mauve-purple skin and green shoulders. Flesh is brownish red. Rich, smoky brandy flavor. Expect some cracking. Unusual variety said to have originated from the Cherokee Indians.
6. Garden Peach- (71 days) Ind. Fuzzy skinned 2 oz. yellow fruits with hint of pink when ripe. Light fruity, low acid taste-very different. These unique beauties produce a lot but have a long shelf life. I am often still picking these into October. Brought from France in 1862.
7. Glacier- ( 56 days) Det. Very early, 1-2” fruits with a full flavor that most of the other early tomatoes lack. This is a potato-leaf variety that originated in Sweden.
8. Green Zebra- Ind. (72 days) A delicious tangy salad tomato, Green Zebra is ripe just as the green fruit develops a yellow blush, accentuating the darker green stripes. The 3-4 oz. fruits are the ideal size for slicing into wedges for salads. Vigorous plants are productive over a long season. Developed by Tom Wagner. Because it was developed in 1985 it is technically not an heirloom, we feel this is the best place to list it.
9. Mortgage Lifter- (75 days) Ind. Sweet flavor, very large, meaty fruit with pink skin. A.K.A. Radiator Charlie. New variety to our farm and we are hoping its name comes true! We have heard of these giants
topping 1 lb.
10. Paul Robeson- (80 days) Ind. There is a cult following for this tomato because of its distinctive sweet, smoky flavor. Fruits are brick red and 7-10 oz. Robeson was a famous opera singer and Equal Rights
Advocate for Blacks. This Russian heirloom was named in his honor. Limited quantities.
11. Rosa de Berne- (80 days) Ind. Rich, sweet translucent pink, smooth, round fruit. Delicious, 5oz, soft skinned tomato that originated in France. An Earth Care Farm favorite.
12. Rutgers- (75 days) Det. This multi purpose, 6-8 oz tomato was originally developed by the Campbell’s Soup Co. It has a bright red color throughout and that old-fashioned flavor that too many tomatoes lack today. F1, V1, ASC, L
13. San Marzano-(80 days) Ind. Long, classic Italian paste tomato for canning and puree. A favorite among people who can, due to its larger percentage of solid meat. Holds well on the vine and in storage.
14. Striped German- (78 days) Ind. The flat, medium-to-large, ribbed-shoulder tomatoes are shaded yellow and red. The marbled interior looks beautiful sliced. Complex, fruity flavor and smooth texture.
15. Yellow Pear Cherry- ( 70 Days) Ind. Tall, vigorous vine bears quantities of small, 3/4 to 1 oz., lemon yellow, pear-shaped fruits. Mild flavor. They look stunning when paired with red and gold cherry tomatoes.
ORGANIC HYBRID TOMATOES
16. Big Beef- (70 days) Ind. Early, flavorful large, 8-10 oz., mostly blemish-free, globe-shaped red fruit. They have full flavor and ripen early for their size. An improvement on Jet Star; slightly earlier, larger, firmer, and with a somewhat taller plant. Arguably, the best all-around ""beefsteak" tomato for a home garden. AS, F2, L, N, TMV, V
17. Celebrity- (78 days) Det. - Gardeners kept asking us to grow these flavorful, firm, red 7 oz fruits. These guys are easy to grow. A gardeners’ favorite. V1, F1, F2, ASC, N, S, TMV
18. Early Girl- (60 days) Ind. Heavy yielding, early slicing tomato with sweet, meaty flavor. Nice red globes average 4-6oz.and firm in texture, so blemish resistant. Not as tasty as the later tomatoes but we can pardon this girl due to her timeliness
19. Red Grape- (60 days) These are what we refer to as the pop culture tomato. They are the classic tiny grape variety that are sweet but bred more for their long shelf life. We included them because they are often requested but we prefer the Sungold and Supersweet 100’s to these guys.
20. Sun Gold Cherry-(57 days) Ind. Often considered the best cherry tomato. Bright tangerine-orange sweet cherry. High-sugar, orange fruits have a yummy ""tropical"" or ""winey"" taste. Vigorous plants start ripening early and bear right through the season. Will split after heavy rain. Our favorite cherry tomato. TMV, F
21. Supersweet 100 Cherry- (78 days) Ind. Very sweet and very popular. Produces abundant clusters of 1” round fruits. V, F1
22. Principe Borghese- (75 days) An Italian heirloom used for sun drying. Has little juice and few seeds. Great for sauce too. Lots of oval shaped fruits with a nipple on the bottom. Produce abundantly for a long season and won’t crack.New!
23. Tess’s Land Race Currant- (76 days) “Brett Grohsgal of Even’Star organic farm bred Tess in 1997 from a two-generation, five-parent set of crosses, and named it in honor of his maternal grandmother who first
trained him in horticulture when he was five Fruits are all one color per plant, but vary from deep red (approximately 65% of all plants), rose-pink (5%) to golds and yellows (30%). Best harvested with scissors by the sprig as picking individual fruit is tedious. Highly appreciated by restaurant chefs and discerning farmers-market customers. Vines need support. Description from Fedco Seed TMV, F, V New!
24. Jetstar - (72 days)Compact Ind. As hybrids go, Jet Star has been around for a long time. The 1979 Harris catalog reported, “Our Jet Star met with as great a reception as any introduction we ever offered.” Almost 30 years later it remains their best-selling hybrid tomato. In a test of 16 commercial varieties grown in high tunnels at Highmoor Farm, it had the highest yield of total marketable fruit and of premium-quality fruit. Also rated the top greenhouse tomato by the Maine Food Lab at University in Orono. Year after year it was the best early full-sized tomato in our trials, ripening prolific quantities of cosmetically perfect 7-8 oz. globes with outstanding flavor. The smooth firm fruits almost never scar or crack and have excellent interior and exterior coloration. Resistant to F1 and V. Description from Fedco Seed New!
