47. Rainbow Mix Swiss Chard- (30 days baby, 60 days bunching) Mix of red, pink, white, yellow and orange stems with green leaves. Striking! Great flavor similar to spinach. Just keep harvesting those outer leaves by pulling them rather that cutting.

48. Tango Celery- (80 days) Self-blanching variety with beautiful apple-green, smooth stems and good flavor. Bolt resistant and shows some tolerance to Fusarium. For juicy stalks, water often. New!

49. Tendergreen Broccoli - (67 days) F-1 hybrid. “Tender and delicious,” says Fedco trialer Donna Dyrek. This variety has replaced the Packman broccoli we used to carry because it is a week earlier. The deep green, medium-large beads do a good job of shedding water. No side shoots. New!

50. Fiesta Broccoli - (86 days) F-1 hybrid. Compact plants set uniform bright green tightly domed heads that stand both cold weather and heat with considerable aplomb. Produces a slurry of side shoots. It is reported that a fedco grower harvested no fewer than ten side shoots from one healthy plant on a day in October, the largest as big as a main head at 6-7", several others nearly as hefty, enough to comprise 3-4 supermarket bunches, weeks after the main head had been cut. New!

51. Oliver Brussel Sprouts- (90 days) F-1 hybrid. Oliver inspires testimonials because it is so early and so easy to grow. In every field comparison, in every kind of season from sizzling heat to numbing chill, Oliver has been way ahead of the rest of the pack in all categories. Stately plants produce goodsized sprouts with the characteristic classic shape, tight buds, and mild flavor. Early, dependable and productive, Oliver is deservedly our best-selling brassica. Description from Fedco. New!

52. Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage- (63 days) Open-pollinated. This wonderful early cabbage originated in England in the early 1800s, was first grown in America in 1840, perfected by a German truck gardener in northern New Jersey and released by Peter Henderson in 1868. Henderson in 1902 asserted that “it was more largely grown than all other first early cabbages combined” and called it an “old reliable always to be depended upon for its uniformity in earliness and crop.” Ann Elder has found it to be a fantastic fall cabbage as well. Wakefield’s compact medium 2-3 lb. heads are distinctively pointy. The pyramidal shape with sparse outside foliage permits close spacing. Tender flavorful waxy-looking Wakefield has stood the test of the ages and is still prized by home and market gardeners. Description from Fedco. New!

53. Ruby Perfection Cabbage- (85 days) F-1 hybrid. This fancy midseason type has produces lovely solid deep purple-red spherical heads averaging 4-6 lb, occasionally reaching 8 lbs. 54. Snow Crown Cauliflower- (70 days) F-1 hybrid. Though we (Fedco) continue to trial early cauliflowers, nothing comes close to Snow Crown. Makes cauliflower a cinch to grow. Dependable producer of uniform 6-7" heads early summer through October. Drought resistant. Very early. Some tendency for pink heads in adverse conditions. 1975 All-America winner from Takii. Description from Fedco. New!

55. Winterbor Kale- (60 days) B.o. (acephala group) F-1 hybrid. Vigorous grower, shows the best cold hardiness and the richest blue-green color. Curled leaves are highly ruffled with good mild flavor, especially after they’ve been kissed by some of our frigid November nights. We harvest this variety from summer into winter. New!

56. Piracicaba - (60 days) Open-pollinated. Pronounced peer-a-SEA-cuh-buh. About halfway between a heading broccoli and a broccoli raab, these succulent tender small green heads with very large beads make delightful raw eating. Very loose heads, lots of side shoots, sweet stalks. Even the fairly large leaves make excellent greens. Garden writer Barbara Damrosch found it equally delicious steamed. NY State trialers report it is best as a fall crop with relatively good frost tolerance, although it was bred to withstand heat and has produced heads at temperatures in the 90s in trials in California. Already a hit with customers, it became even more popular thanks to Damrosch’s wonderful column about it in an October 2006 Washington Post. Piracicaba is a city and river in Brazil famous for its beautiful waterfalls, and home of the university where this cultivar was developed. Description from Fedco. New!
