Sweet Peppers

California Wonder (68 days, 80 red) Large, blocky, thick-walled stuffing pepper introduced by Burpee’s in 1928 and still a hit today. Upright, everbearing habit keeps fruit high on 24-30” plants. Jolene’s Red Italian: A brilliant red with smooth sides, medium thick walls, strong shoulders, fruits averaging 9-11 inches long, tapering to a slightly blunted tip. Eggplant

Black Beauty (65 days) Standard open-pollinated American-Italian eggplant with high yields and no spines. Large bell-shaped fruits, range from 1-3 lbs and have a slight signature ribbing. Ping Tung Long (58 days) F-1 hybrid. Named for a town in Taiwan. Plants are vigorous, stress tolerant, and start producing early for a decent overall yield. If Pingtung is harvested before full maturity, its light purple color is especially appealing. As it approaches its full 11", its skin darkens but retains a pleasing sheen. Rosa Bianca (73 days) HEIRLOOM A lovely Sicilian variety with light pink-lavender fruits streaked with colors of creamy white and violet. Mild, creamy taste with no bitterness and very low number of seeds. Does best in areas with warm nights and can be lower yielding in extreme northern areas. -excerpted from High Mowing Seeds catalog

Rosita (84 days) Open-pollinated. Early heirloom, productive and tasty without a hint of bitterness. These pear-shaped pink-lavender fruits with white shoulders are 6–8" long and 4–6" wide. Snowy (60 days) Elegant snow-white eggplant with a medium to thick skin and delicate sweet flavor. Snowy's texture is firmer and meatier than most, holding up well in cooking. Hot Peppers

Black Hungarian (60 days black, 80 red) Highly ornamental in the field and on the plate! Green foliage is highlighted by purple veins and beautiful purple flowers. Sturdy plants grow 30-36" tall. Produces 3-4" fruits similar in shape to a jalapeno, but black in color ripening to red. Great in salsa and other Southwest dishes for mild heat and delicious flavor. Czech Black (65 days) Open-pollinated. Judged the most beautiful vegetable grown at Five Springs Farm CSA. Black when immature, the 2-1/2" long conical fruits ripen to a lustrous garnet. Mild juicy flesh runs with a cherry red juice when cut. The heat, a tad less than a jalapeńo’s, is in the ribs and seeds and is “just right for many of us.” 2-1/2–3' bushes bear very early, setting about 20 pointed thick-walled peppers per plant. Ring-O-Fire (45 days green, 60 red) “And it burns, burns, burns” just like Johnny Cash said. This is a hot, hot pepper. Ring-O-Fire matures earlier than the regular cayenne and has a glossy sheen with a fire engine red color. Prolific and dependable. Peppers average 4” long. Thai Hot (82 days) Open-pollinated. Anne Elder gets 200 of these little “sweeties” per plant. She calls them “cute little compact treasures full of heat.” Thai Hot checks in around 80,000 Scoville units. Thai Hot’s small conical peppers ripen to bright red and stand erect above the foliage so it’s grown as a red and green Christmas potted plant. Early pinching will produce a bushy 8" plant that can be pulled, roots and all, and hung to dry for winter use or grown inside for both ornamental and edible enjoyment. Achillea, Cerise Queen: Also known as Pink Yarrow. Easy to grow and tolerant of drought, heat and poor soil. Beautiful cherry-red flat flower heads 2–4" across on 18" stems with lacy foliage. A good border plant. Feeds many beneficial insects.

Amaranth, Qis Red Globe

Bachelor’s Button, Garnet (90 days) Ruffled dark maroon. Dates from Buist’s 1942 catalog. Hard to find.

Batchelor’s Button, Blue Boy: Plants will bloom throughout the growing season. Well maintained strain with all blue flowers. Extremely easy to grow and dries well. Self-seeding hardy annual, grows 2-3' tall.

Cleome: Rose Queen, Violet Queen, and White Queen

Cosmos, Early Wonder Mix (75 days) Extra early splendid large flowers for cutting in shades of white, pink, rose and carmine. Blossoms up to 4" on 40" plants. Up to two weeks earlier than Sensation. Cosmos,

Sensation Mix (85-90 days) This large-flowered cosmos needs little tending. Withstands the first mild frosts of fall. 4–5'. Pinks, roses, magentas, occasional whites. Grows well in light, dry soils. Great cut flower.

Four O’clock, Tall Mix

Heliotrope, Marine (120 days) Native to Peru, smells like sweet violet, but deeper, and has been described as similar to vanilla, almond, or cherry pie. Works well in hanging baskets, containers, the front of borders, or any location where the scent will readily reach you. It may be transplanted indoors for the winter. 14–18" plants with deeply etched viburnum-like dark green leaves bear big flat clusters of tiny star-shaped royal blue flowers.

Hollyhock, Indian Spring: Single and semi-double mix in shades of rose, pink, and white. Height 5-6 feet, trellis in high winds. Likes full sun, well-drained soil. Good for cut flowers. From Plant Hart’s Seeds

Marigold, Lemon Gem (68 days) Compact 10–12" plant bears tiny bright lemon-yellow flowers early, through summer, into fall. Chinese Forget-Me-Not

Marigold, Queen Sophia French Dwarf Double (60 days) Award-winning anemone-flowered dwarf. Each plant produces many bicolored double blooms. Flowers are deep orange rust and, as they mature, petals are edged with gold. Stands 10–12".

Nasturtium, Jewel Mix (42 days) Bushy variety holds bloom above foliage. Early free-flowering blend of colors. 16"tall.

Nasturtium, Tall Climbing Mix (65 days) Tall trailing mix to 2' in red, orange, gold and exquisite bicolor shades. The red blossoms have a spicier taste than those of lighter colors. Plants will spread and fill in a huge space but having no tendrils cannot, strictly speaking, climb. The most prolific blossom set of any of the nasturtiums we have tried.

Sage, Clary: a.k.a. Tricolor Salvia, a.k.a. painted sage. This prolific little beauty is splendid as a dried flower or a filler in fresh arrangements. Although its leaves are entirely green, its name comes from its white and blue flowers set off by large pink-to-purple bracts. Easily air-dried, it will remain very colorful, flowering until frost if old blooms are removed. 18" stalks. Needs well-drained soil.

Sunflower, Autumn Beauty Mix OG (70-90 days) a 6–8' multibranching beauty. Produces a lovely mixture of earthen shades, petal colors ranging from bright yellow to bronze and purples. Most have a characteristic red ring enclosing a black center. Blossoms 4–6" across are perfect as the center of giant flower arrangements. Has pollen. CCOF-certified. From Fedco Seeds

Sunflower, Pro Cut Orange: Tall, with strong stems. 3-4" blooms. Pollenless. *Day-length neutral. Ht. 60-72".

Sunflower, Sunbright Supreme: Blooms more quickly than Sunbright under short days. More rounded petals and shorter, more rigid stems with reduced lower leaves make this an excellent variety for bouquet work. May also be used to produce dwarf-type blossoms. Single stem. Pollenless. Ht. 52-64".

Sunflower, Moonbright

Sunflower, Moulin Rouge: Exquisite, deep burgundy petals surround an ebony center. A pollenless, branching variety with 3-4" blooms that are a hit with everyone. Use in bouquets mixed with contrasting colors. Side stems are thinner, yet stronger than most other branching varieties, averaging 30". Ht. 60-80". Sunflower, Valentine

Zinnias, Cactus Flowered: bold masses of bright, mixed colors. Thrive during hot weather in well fertilized soil with moderate water. Ht. 2.5 ft, blossoms 5-6 inches across

Tomatoes

Amish Paste (80 days) HEIRLOOM One of the sweetest paste tomatoes. Amish is flavorful and juicy enough for slicing, but still meaty enough for timely cooking down. Best of all, it has few seeds, which can make sauces and pastes bitter. Heart-shaped fruits are 8-12 oz and bright red. Ripens to a sweeter taste than many other paste tomatoes. Indeterminate. Black Cherry: Bred in Florida by the late Vince Sapp, the round fruits are almost black in color. The flavor is dynamic - much like an heirloom. High yielding. Indeterminate. Johnny’s Select Seeds

Black Prince: Unusual brown shoulders become orange-red at the blossom end. Color will be deeper and more pronounced in sunnier locations. Distinctive, rich, fruity tomato flavor. Cherokee Purple (72 days) HEIRLOOM Large beefsteak fruits weigh in at a 12-16 oz. Brownish-purple skin with green shoulders and red flesh. Cosmonaut Volkov (68 days)This is a classic beefsteak slicing tomato. This Ukrainian tomato wins taste test after taste test. Perfect blend of sweet and tart, with a rich complexity. Fruits can range from 12-16 oz and are slightly flattened with a healthy red color and moderately green shoulders. Prone to cracking in wet conditions, but not nearly as much as Brandywine. Glacier (55 days) Our earliest tomato and darn good flavor too! Produces high yields of medium sized, 2-3 oz orange-red saladette tomatoes. Flavor is superior to other extra-early varieties, winning all early-season taste tests. Sets fruit at 24” tall and keeps producing all season long. Great for the small garden or containers. Peacevine Cherry (78 days) Peace out in your garden with these delicious and prolific red cherries! Known for its incredible flavor and resistance to cracking. Cucurbits

Boothby’s Blonde Slicing Cucumber OG (63 days) Open-pollinated. Short plump oval fruits average 3–4" and become yellower as they mature. They feature a creamy exterior with contrasting black spines and a juicy refreshing interior. Larger seed cavities than most cukes, but the seeds themselves actually add to the mild sweet flavor that makes it so good for eating out of hand. Marketmore 76 Slicing Cucumber (60-65 days) remains the most widely-planted open-pollinated slicing cuke in the US. The 8-9” dark green fruits stay green and mild-tasting even under heat stress. Multiple disease resistances keep plants vigorous and highly productive across a long picking season. Burgess Buttercup Winter Squash (95 days) Open-pollinated. New England’s favorite winter squash, enjoyed for its sweet deep-orange flesh. New England Pie Pumpkin
(102 days) Open-pollinated. Cucurbita pepo A robust yielder in good seasons. In a recent year, our two hills produced more than 100 pounds, the 25 pumpkins, all vine-ripe, averaged 4.26 lb. Uncle David’s Dakota Dessert Winter Squash
(95 days) Open-pollinated. Crossed with hubbards and other maximas, primarily for color, taste, sweetness, and vigor and hardiness in cold weather, but also for thick flesh, small seed cavities and higher productivity. And it is one rugged buttercup, withstanding several cold summers and all those temperature extremes in recent seasons, producing a lot of squash without skipping a beat. Zeppelin Delicata Winter Squash (100 days) Open-pollinated. The lovely ivory-colored oblong 1 lb. fruits with dark green stripes have the unsurpassed sweetness that gives Delicata its good reputation. Culinary Herbs

Basil, Genovese (68 days)This in-demand basil is always a favorite for pesto and Italian dishes. Produces a strong aroma and heavy yields of large, dark-green, glossy leaves. A wonderful variety to eat fresh or to dry to keep for the winter. This tender annual loves the heat and sun. Will reach up to 18” in height.

Basil, Red Rubin (78 days) More vigorous than Purple Ruffles. Highly ornamental dark purplish-bronze foliage. The green leaf throwbacks have been mostly bred out of this improved strain. A salad of purple basil leaves and yellow tomatoes provides a stunning color contrast. From Denmark. Tested for fusarium

Cilantro, Santo: Days to Maturity : 50-55 to leaf harvest; 90-105 to seed. Classic Mexican herb. Santo is an extra-slow-bolting selection grown for its leaves. Direct seed every two weeks for a continuous supply of fresh leaves. From Johnny’s Select Seeds

Fennel, Zefa Fino (55 days) Bulbing type. 3' with edible blue-green stems and feathery green leaves. When compared with some of the traditional Italian varieties, it proved much more resilient under stress and much less likely to bolt. A spring planting will stand till late summer. We advise a 2nd sowing around July 1 for crisp juicy bulbs till October. Thin to approximately 12" apart in 18" rows; overcrowding induces premature bolting

Parsley, Italian Flat Leaf (70 days) Classic flat leaf variety for use either fresh or dried as a garnish or seasoning. Flat and glossy leaves are toothed on the edges. Stems hold leaves upright for easy bunching. High in vitamin C and many other minerals, it is a very nutritious and tasty addition to meat or vegetable dishes, soups or even salads.

Summer Savory (75 days) Heirloom variety known to be the most subtle and delicate of all the savories, both in taste and in character. Slender, light green leaves grow on reddish, square stems. The aroma is a well-composed duet of both thyme and mint and is most commonly used to flavor beans or in place of rosemary. Plants reach 12-18” tall. Grow similarly to other annual herbs, outdoors with a preference for rich soil and full sun, using a plant spacing of 8-12”. Ideal for containers or indoor pots. Perennial

Medicinal Herbs

Borage (55 days) Produces many small flowers which open blue, turn purple and then pink, making colorful additions to salads. Bushy 2' annual likes sun, prefers moist well-drained soil, will self sow. Young plants are easy to move around. Survives light frosts. CCOF-certified.

Calendula, Alpha

Calendula, Resina (70 days) The best calendula for making tinctures and oils. Its medium-sized single blooms with small eye are extremely resinous, coating your fingers or clippers while you harvest flowers. The medicinal sticky resins impart a pleasant odor. Blossoms are primarily bright yellow with yellow centers. A few will be orange with light orange centers. Cheery flowers, good medicine.

Catnip (80 days to flower) Nepeta cataria - This member of the mint family is a well-known favorite of our feline friends but also a medicinal herb for people, known to have relaxing properties. Herbaceous perennial to zone 3.

Lettuce

Dark Green Romaine: A classic heirloom within its type, and another piece of the Abundant Life Seed collection. Head closed at the top, blanching the heart, but not twisted as in Brown Golding. The darker green leaves seem to go with its especially sweet flavor. One of the best performers in the ‘04 disease trial of romaines. Seeds from Wild Garden Seed

Flashy Trout Back: A selection of the popular Austrian variety, Forellanschluss. Named for its freckled appearence, this romaine type lettuce has been a Moonstone Gardens favorite for spring plantings. Seeds from Wild Garden Seed

with… Red Sails (29 days baby, 55 full size) Perfect red leaf for salad mixes and teenage heads. Fast growing leaves with burgundy edges and bright green centers. Beedy’s Camden Kale (60 days) Open-pollinated. Brassica oleracea Abundant wavy blue-grey leaves are full to the bottom, not as tightly ruffled as Winterbor. More tender than Siberian and lasts longer into the fall…very sweet and juicy. Over-wintered in zone 5. Excerpted from Fedco Seeds

Bright Lights Swiss Chard: Stems of many colors including gold, pink, orange, purple, red, and white ... with bright and pastel variations. Lightly savoyed, green or bronze leaves. The taste is milder than ordinary chard, with each color a bit different. Suitable for production year round, but somewhat less frost hardy than normal for chard.

Cornet de Bordeaux Escarole: The “cornet” type escaroles are formed of broad smooth wrapping leaves that fully enclose the heart, creating, a crunchy romaine-like salad for winter use. More cold hardy than most other escaroles, used for winter harvest in France.

Maternally selected for more cold-hardiness, greater vigor and more BL and PM resistance in humidity than any other pure-cultivar collard. Tatsoi (45 days) Open-pollinated. Can be seeded as late as August and withstands frost. also known as Tah Tsai. Anne Elder picked it all fall into December even after a snow melt-off. In winter it was still not burnt by cold and remained sweet. Spoon-shaped thick dark green leaves make beautiful compact rosettes with mild brassica flavor. Good stir-fried and in soups. Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage (63 days) Open-pollinated. Originated in England in the early 1800s, was first grown in America in 1840. Compact medium 2–3 lb. heads are distinctively pointy. The pyramidal shape with sparse outside foliage permits close spacing. Tender flavorful waxy-looking Wakefield has stood the test of the ages and is still prized by home and market gardeners. Piracicaba Broccoli (56 days) Open-pollinated. (pronounced peer-a-SEA-cah-bah) About halfway between a heading broccoli and a broccoli raab, these succulent tender small green heads with very large beads make delightful raw eating. Very loose heads, lots of side shoots, sweet stalks. Even the fairly large leaves make excellent greens. Relatively good frost tolerance, although it was bred to withstand heat and has produced heads at temperatures in the 90s in trials in California. Excerpted from Fedco Seeds
