FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
1. What is the difference between screened and unscreened compost?
The screened compost is our finished compost that has been passed through a screen with 1/2” holes, so the particles are no larger than ½” in diameter. It is ideal for vegetable and flower gardens and top dressing beds.
The unscreened is also finished, yet has larger course fragments like rocks, shells, and wood chips. It is quite fertile although difficult to work with a tiller. It works fine for shrub and tree plantings but is bothersome if you are seeding fine things or root crops like beets, onions or carrots.
2. How to use the unscreened compost?
Many customers make a base of unscreened compost in a garden and then buy a smaller amount of screened compost for the top part of the garden that gets worked by hoes and tillers.
3. Is it organic?
Our compost is on the approved product list for Organic Certification for farming and gardening purposes.
